Queen Beatrix III 55 x 78 cm (22 x 31 inches) Acrylics and watercolor pencil on illustration board. This assignment was to create a classical painting, portraying the Dutch queen in a dignified manner that befits her position as a head of state. The artwork also had to be designed as such that it is in harmony with the pace that is was assigned to be exhibited. The color palette consists primarily of oranges and blues. Both hues symbolize royal colors and the combination in which they are used, provides a modern look to the artwork. However, I do like duality because this often leads to new things and brings tension into a painting. Therefore, in contrast with the modern color palette, I decided to use a classical composition with application techniques to match. The approach results in a marriage between present and past which yields a classical look without being old-fashioned. This bridge between the present and the past, is also meant to be a symbol for the context where the painting is exhibited: A formal wedding room where marriages are concluded. The original can be seen on permanent exhibition at the city hall in Valkenburg ZH in Holland. |
