Princes Juliana

30 x 42 cm (12 x 16 inches)

Acrylics and watercolor pencil on Illustration board.

This former Dutch Queen (she was the mother of Queen Beatrix) was known for her kindness, wisdom and informal behavior. She was a very sweet lady.

I wanted to emphasize these characteristics and instinctively I knew that using a sparkling, almost overpowering flowery background and a spontaneous sketchy look was the right approach for this painting.

The background flowers are not just a random element, they were her favorite plants. If you look carefully (see detail shot), you will notice a much bolder use of brush strokes and colored pencil than in my other work. This style matches her personality and contributes to the mood of the painting.
